Steps for writing a URL to the tag (Web Link)

The most straightfoward way to set up your Magic Tag is to have it send the device that scanned it to a web address. Sometimes this is a simple website but it doesn't have to be. There are many different types of web addresses (also called URLs)

Step 1: Locate and copy the link to the the content that you wish to share like:

  • A website URL
  • URL from a 'Share' button in an app like Spotify, Youtube, etc

The image below is from the Safari share button. Just select "Copy" and it will copy a link to the web address so you can paste it in a later step.

Step 2: Open the 'NFC Tools' App (found in your app store.

Step 3: Select 'Write' from the menu

No tricks here...should just take you to the write page in the app

Step 4: Select 'Add a Record'

You'll see a long list of available options. Don't get distracted, stick to the mission.

Step 5: Select "URL / URI"

This will take you to the page where we will enter the web address for the link (Where the tag will take the device that scans it).

Step 6: Below 'Enter your URL' you'll see an https:// box. Most people don't have to mess with this.

If you have to change the prefix then select the orange Edit button.

Step 7: Touch the field just below the "https://" field and paste the URL that you copied during step 1 in to this box.

On iPhone you long press to bring up the paste option.

Step 8: Press the Checkmark in the top right of the screen to save.

Step 9: Select 'Write' from the menu and hold the tag against the bottom near the camera until the screen says the action is complete and the write has finished.

Step 10: Test the tag by then closing the app and holding the tag back to the phone near the camera. If it worked a notification will show on the screen related to the content you shared. Select it to use the shared content: like following the link.

Special Instructions for Sharing Music

Most music streaming apps or websites have a share button that allows you to text or email a friend with a link to the song you just loved... you just need to copy that link instead of sending it and then follow steps 2-10 above to use it. This also can work with albums and playlists if your service supports it.

From Spotify, Google Play, Amazon Music, and Youtube (and others) you can link to things like

  • Song
  • Album
  • Playlist
  • Video

Examples of what you can share and where to get the link

Here is where you copy a link to a Spotify playlist. To get here find the rectangle with the up arrow coming out of the top.

To share a YouTube link find the up/right pointing arrow and select it. Then locate copy link.

To share a Facebook page locate the link found in profile settings or in the product page section. Select it and then select it again at the bottom to copy it.

In Amazon Music you will find the copy link shown below.

In Spotify you can share a playlist or album through the "..." button at the top right. See the example below.

Special Instructions for Sharing Contact Info

The NFC Tools app has a contacts info section. You should be able to enter your information into this section and then write it to the chip. Another option is to send your contact card to the tag using the share button in your contacts app. However, Apple iPhones won't be able to read either of these.

To make a contact card readable by iPhones your options are:

If using iPhone Option 1 (Best and recommended option!):

  • Link to a webpage that shows your contact info like your Realtor page, Google Business Page, etc.

Just use the web address of the wepage that contains your contact info.

If using iPhone Option 2:

  • Share your contact card from your iPhone to DropBox (or other cloud service) in a public folder as a .vcf file
  • Create a link to that public .vcf file located in a public cloud folder. How to do this varies by service...icloud example is below.
  • Use this link how you would a normal URL in the NFC tools app. (Note when you share your contact card in iOS it asks you to select what you want to include in the share. Carefully decide what you want to share before saving to the cloud service)

This sounds easier than it is in practice. The iPhone software is very problematic in these steps and not consistent in behavior. This is an issue with iPhone software limits and not the Magic Tag itself.

If using iPhone Option 3:

  • Use a business card or NFC sharing service. Info on one is included in the NFC Tools App: "Unit Link". These services provide a URL to use for folks to find your contact info along with other things you would like to share in some cases.
